Dear Hudson,
This is the
story of your exciting and somewhat dramatic entrance into this world. Through
out my pregnancy with you between the conception, the blood clots, and
everything else we went through together, I didn’t expect much less. I loved you
from the moment we saw your tiny blast and I am so thankful to have such a
happy and sweet boy in my life that I’m sure will continue to keep me on my
toes like you have from day one.
On Friday
February 20th I decided that you were going to be born within the
next 24 hours, or I was going to lose my mind! By that point the doctor had
told me that you were coming “any day now” for almost 3 weeks, and I was ready
for you to get here. So I did what every other crazy pregnant mom does and I
downed 4 tablespoons of castor oil at 10:00 that night. Which was probably
unnecessary because I started having contractions less than 15 minutes later,
and I don’t think it usually works that fast.
Over the
next few hours the contractions became closer and closer and more intense, so
around 1:00 am on the 21st, your dad and I left for the hospital.
After getting about half way there, we realized we didn’t have my wallet so I
had no ID or insurance card. So of course, we turned around to go home and get
it. We finally made it to the hospital around 2:00 am.
After
getting checked in and taken to triage, we started to get settled in. I was
still having contractions but they weren’t progressing anymore and I wasn’t
dilated much at this point. The nurses assured us we would be there for quite a
while. They continued to check on you and me for a while and soon they became a
little concerned because you had stopped moving for quite a while. After doing
an ultrasound and checking a few other things though, they decided that you
were probably just sleeping and everything was going to be all right. So now we
just sat and anxiously waited for more to happen. The nurses couldn’t induce
anything because you were 9 days early so all we could do is wait.
Because I
was on blood thinners, the nurses and doctor were hoping we could wait until
about 10:00 am before I made any more progress but I was really just
uncomfortable and really ready to get an epidural so I could get a little rest.
They finally admitted me and put us in a room around 5:00 am. At that point,
things were getting more painful but I couldn’t get an epidural yet because
they needed the lab to run blood tests. So as I waited for the people for the
lab to come in, they gave me some IV pain medicine to help me relax through the
contractions. Your doctor was on call and delivering a few babies that morning
so he stopped in to check on us and said everything looked great and it would
probably be quite a while longer before you made your appearance.
Finally
around 6 am the people from the labs came, my blood levels weren’t where they
needed to be so they wanted to keep waiting before I could get my epidural. By
now though I was starting to progress more so they gave me some medicine to
help reverse the blood thinners I was on. We had to wait another hour for that
to take effect though. It was about this time that I started to realize that it
was highly unlikely that I was going to get an epidural and I think I made sure
everyone in the hospital knew how much I DID NOT WANT TO HAVE YOU NATURAL!!!
The hour passed and so they tried to get the lab back to check my levels again.
Of course that took over another half hour and I was not happy and I think most
of Glendale knew it at this point. My nurse checked me one more time just before
my blood draw and I was only at a 5. When the phlebotomist finally arrived, she
started drawing my blood just in time for my water to break.
As soon as
my water broke they called your doctor and told him you were coming and fast.
After one more contraction I knew it was time to push. The nurses tried to tell
me to wait for the doctor, but you weren’t waiting. Less than 5 minutes after my water brokee and only two pushes, you came out
so fast that no one was there to catch you! Luckily, the head nurse noticed the
cord was wrapped around your neck and as you came out she was able to pull it
loose enough for you to somehow slip through and untangle yourself. Less than a
minute later your doctor came through the door and helped your dad cut the
cord.
Your dad
and I had been unsure what to name you but as soon as I saw them lift you off
the table, I knew you were a Hudson. You looked so big and just solid, I knew
you needed a strong and sturdy name and Hudson just seemed to fit.
When they
handed you to me, you had the biggest but cutest pouty lip (I think you were as
mad as I was about the whole epidural situation…) I didn’t get to hold you for
long, you were pretty purple from the cord being around you, but after only a
few minutes with the nurses you were back in my arms and much happier.
Hudson you
are the sweetest baby. You are so easy going and always have a smile on your
face. Isla is clearly your favorite person in the world and I hope it stays
that way. We love your chubby cheeks and your beautiful blue eyes. You are a
strong baby in so many ways and we love you more than anything. I’m so glad you
fought to be in this world and in our family, we love you sweet boy!
Love,
Mommy
