If I Built a Car: The benefits of construction toys

If you ever see our playroom or my kids rooms, it's no secret that I love educational toys and children's books! I was so excited when Hudson got new construction toys for his birthday and an adorable book called If I Built a Car by Chris Van Dusen and one of our favorite building toys, Zoobs! If I Built a Car is such an imaginative book! The boy describes his ultimate dream car and to be honest it sounds pretty amazing, who wouldn't want a robot that drives and a pool in the floor?! Isla and Hudson both loved it and have asked to have it read to them multiple times a day. This was the perfect combination gift because of course, after reading, they want to try to build their own car!

We love building and contruction toys! The benefits of playing with these types of toys are endless. It helps with hand eye-coordination, fine motor skills, spacial awareness, creative thinking, problem solving and divergent thinking, the list goes on and on! We have so many legos but I love the diversity of zoobs. The zoo racerz pack in particular is really awesome because the wheels also teach kids about gears and movement as well. Toys like blocks, legos, zoobs, kenex, etc. can also be used to teach sorting, sizes, colors, and counting, just through the simple conversations you have with your children while playing.

Dear Zoo: Literacy Activity

One of our favorite books is Dear Zoo: A Lift-the-Flap Book. This was one of my childhood favorites, so of course I wanted to pass that onto my kids as well! I have created a fun literary activity to go along with this book that can be modified for multiple ages. This was a great activity for both my 4 year old and 2 year old as well! I hope you enjoy this free download as much as we did! To download the PDF click HERE!

Valentine's Flower Heart

I love holidays but mostly I love decorating for holidays! This last thanksgiving, Isla and I started making something to hang on the playroom door for each holiday and it has been such a fun tradition so far! For Valentine's Day, we decided to make an easy craft that only took about 30-45 minutes to create.

Supplies needed:
Artificial hydrangea stems (about 5, but it depends on how big you make your heart.)
Cardboard (we used a Target box)
Scissors or box cutter
Glue (I always use hot glue because it dries so fast)
Ribbon for hanging

First, trace your heart onto your cardboard and cut it out. I used the flap of the box so I could easily fold it in half to create a symmetrical heart.
Second, pull the blossoms off of your stems.

Then begin gluing your blossoms on until your cardboard is covered. The more blossoms you add the fuller your heart will look.

Last, attach a ribbon to the back of your heart if you would like to hang it. Ta-da you're done!

This was so simple to do and Isla loves making something special for the playroom. Happy Valentine's!

What Makes You Beautiful

I have a friend and most of us do, or maybe this person is you, that genuinely doesn't like themselves. It truly makes me feel awful to know that someone doesn't feel comfortable in their own skin. No we don't always feel stunning or fabulous or gorgeous and we don't need to, but I would hope that most days we're all at least content with ourselves. As moms, we're put under so much pressure to be put together 100%. We have to look like a model, have kids that are geniuses that only eat organic and never watch tv, and on top of that our house must always be spotless or we just aren't a good mom anymore. At least that's how the world makes us feel sometimes. With all of this, its easy to start telling ourselves that we're just not making the cut, we're just not good enough. It starts with "I need to loose 10 more pounds, my hair never looks good, my teeth aren't as white as they could be, my house is a mess, my kids don't speak 3 languages..." and slowly we've torn ourselves down so much that in the end it doesn't even matter if we do all those things, because as soon as we do, we'll find 10 more things we don't like about ourselves. I think we should always try to do our best, work hard, and improve, but while we're doing that we need to remember that not only is our best enough, it's freaking awesome! We are more than enough. As moms we do so much and it never ever (ever) ends. We have little tiny humans that not only need us, they love us, they worship us, they never want to stop being around us, in fact if your kids are like mine, they literally never want to be more than 1 mm away from us. There's a reason why they love us, because we're amazing to them and shouldn't that alone make us feel pretty special? How many times have your kids or your husband told you that you look beautiful or pretty? And do we brush it off most of the time because they're "supposed" to say things like that, they love us. Don't brush it off, say thank you because they mean it!
I have a challenge to moms this year. Every day look in the mirror and write down at least one thing you like about yourself that day. It can't be "I like my shirt." Because you can like a shirt that is sitting at the store, that has nothing to do with you. You need to say "I love how the shirt I picked out looks great on ME today." If you like your lipstick, you need to say "I love how my lipstick enhances how beautiful my lips are." But write something down every day! Even if you feel silly, just do it! At the end of the year you'll have a whole list of things that should make you feel great about the way you look. That way, on days that you are feeling crappy about yourself you can look back and remember that you are beautiful! I would also challenge you to write down one good thing you did each day or something you accomplished, because how we feel about ourselves should be more than just about how we look. Sometimes we might only be able to say that we fed our kids and kept everyone alive that day, I think that's a pretty big accomplishment some days! Lets try to love ourselves though, and if you know someone that really struggles with confidence, give them a genuine compliment every day. Lets all be beautiful and be kind.

Dear Nora

Dear Nora,
In the weeks leading up to your birth I was terrified, absolutely terrified that I would give birth to you at home, in a grocery store, or on the side of the road. I could tell you were eager to get here and it wouldn't take long once it was time. I was right but luckily we made it to the hospital just in time.
I woke up to a sharp pain in my abdomen and even though I wasn't having any contractions, I new it was time. I woke up your daddy and we piled Hudson and Isla in the car to take them to a friend's house. During the 20 minute drive to the hospital my contractions started and grew stronger and closer. At my appointment 5 days earlier I was already dilated to 5 cm so I knew we didn't have much time.
As we waited as patiently as possible in the ER, I knew we were running out of time. They finally took us back to triage where they started asking questions to check us in. Finally, I had to interrupt and ask the nurse to check my progress because I was feeling ready to push. Sure enough she decided to finish the questions later and get us into the delivery room as fast as possible. The doctor came in a started gowning (as slowly as possible, I thought your dad might push him out of the way and just deliver you himself!) a couple minutes and a few pushes later you were here! It had only been an hour and 15 minutes since I had woken up and you were here! I just kept thinking that if I would have stayed in bed and brushed it off we wouldn't have made it in time. I'm so glad we did though!
You were only 7lbs 6oz and 19 inches long. Compared to your brother and sister you seemed so teeny tiny! You had a head full of beautiful dark hair like Hudson and you looked so much like him but with Isla's expressions and demeanor. It took us a few hours to name you but we finally decided on Nora, an English name meaning "honor".
I have so many hopes and dreams for you! I hope you honor yourself and the ones you love. That you stay as beautiful and sweet spirited as you have been since the moment you came to us. You are loved by so many, especially your brother and sister that just want to hug and kiss and smother you all the time. It took Hudson a day to warm up to you but now he watches over you like every big brother should. We love you so much and we're so grateful for the beautiful blessing Heavenly Father has given us. We love you always Nora!
Love,
Mommy

Miracle Baby #3! Coming December 2016!

It is so crazy to me that we will have 3 kids by the end of the year when 6 years ago I was sitting in a doctor’s office feeling like we wouldn’t ever be able to afford a single IVF treatment. We are so excited and truly feel so blessed every day.

This past September, we had the opportunity to stay with James in Washington DC while he was doing a rotation. We had been in DC for about 3 weeks when I got a message from another Footsteps for Fertility grant recipient asking if we were going to do a study that Idaho Center for Reproductive Medicine was participating in. At the time, having another baby was not even on our radar. We just had planned to wait until we were on Tricare, at a military base that does fertility treatments, anything to help curb the cost of another IVF cycle. My friend told me that it was only $4500 including medications if we qualified.  With insurance, I’ve generally paid over $2000 for medications alone so this was an amazing deal. James and I talked about it that night and the next day I had talked with the doctor, changed our flights home, and had plans to get started.

We had to do a series of blood tests, interviews, etc to make sure we qualified. We were pretty confident that we would qualify because we had taken all of these tests before and fit their qualifications, they just needed more recent tests. The only test we were worried about was James’ semen analysis. I only give you all those great details because we hadn’t done one since his last cycle of chemo and we knew that it has the ability to make men sterile. We literally only had to have one sperm to qualify and our nurse was literally in shock when she called to let us know that we only had 1 motile sperm and so we were officially able to participate in the study.  Maybe we should had realized then that something was wrong with James again but we were just excited we qualified. I also had to quit nursing Hudson cold turkey but we both got over that pretty quick!

So we were all set and ready to start medications around March 1st and the last week of March we found out James’ cancer was back. After talking it over quite a bit James and I both agreed that we should just go for it anyway. We have lots of people around us to help if we need it and other than the freak blood clot with Hudson my pregnancies have been pretty easy so we would be ok. We ended up starting medications a couple weeks later and the timing of everything just worked out as perfectly as it could.

Luckily this time I responded really slowly to the stimulation medications, which helped me to avoid all the problems I had when we got pregnant with Hudson. It also helped keep us in the study. Part of their stipulations were that if your estrogen levels go over 5000 you have to be dropped from the study and pay for a frozen transfer later, which we really wanted to avoid. When I did my egg retrieval for Hudson, my levels were around 8000. So thankfully my doctor was really great about avoiding that this time and everything went so well.

We were so excited to hear that we were pregnant 2 weeks later and I had very little hyperstimulation, I only looked like 20 weeks pregnant instead of 40 this time, haha. Also part of this study was that they did genetic testing on all of our embryos, which enabled us to find out just 2 weeks after that that we’re having a baby girl! We also know that we have 1 more girl frozen if we decide to have any more in the future, which is super weird to know and makes me really glad that we never did genetic testing before. I’m also glad we don’t have any “choice” in the sex of our baby, I know a lot of people do and that is great for them but it’s just too weird for me to think about. I would stress way too much about a decision like that.

It really is so crazy to look at the whole situation and how timing is everything. When James found out he had cancer again I was just thinking why could this not have happened like 3 or 4 months ago when we weren’t getting ready to do IVF, move across the country, start a whole new crazy life?! And that’s when I remembered our 1 sperm (I know, it’s random) but had he had the cancer sooner, we wouldn’t have had a single one and we wouldn’t have qualified for the study. Timing is everything. God has a plan that is perfect, even when we don’t understand.

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. –Proverbs 3:5-6

I Feel My Savior's Love

With Easter being tomorrow I thought there is no better time to express my love and gratitude for my Savior and his atonement. I honestly don't know even want to think of how different my life would be if I didn't have a knowledge and testimony of our Savior's greatest gift and sacrifice for us. People are often surprised by my ability to roll with the punches and take whatever comes my way. I can't take credit for that though, the only reason I can do this is because I know without a doubt that I can take anything sent my way with the Lord on my side. He has a plan for us, each and every one of us. He loves us, he guides us, he is always always there for us.
A couple of weeks ago we found out that James has cancer again. At first we were very hopeful that surgery and possibly one round of chemotherapy would take care of it and we could move forward, but we just recently found out that his cancer is very aggressive and will require 4 cycles of chemotherapy. Hearing that news was far from easy of course but we know that there is a plan and this is part of it.
The other day a friend sent me this quote and it is one of my favorites! It perfectly expresses how I feel about these experiences.
“Just when all seems to be going right, challenges often come in multiple doses applied simultaneously. When those trials are not consequences of your disobedience, they are evidence that the Lord feels you are prepared to grow more (Prov 3:11–12). He therefore gives you experiences that stimulate growth, understanding, and compassion which polish you for your everlasting benefit. To get you from where you are to where He wants you to be requires a lot of stretching" -Elder Richard G. Scott
We often consider the experiences in our lives as "tests", but these times of hardship are not the test. These are the periods of learning, its after the hardships that we are tested. It is after the these times that we need to show what we learned and how we have grown from our experiences, that is truly the test. I don't believe that Heavenly Father gives us "trials", I believe he gives us experiences and how we respond is what determines whether or not it is a "trial."
I am pretty sure I have mentioned this scripture in the past but it is truly one of my favorites. In Doctorine and Covenents 122:7-8 it says "And, if thou shouldst be cast into the pit, or into the hands of murderers, and the sentence of death passed upon thee; if thou be cast into the deep; if the billowing surge conspire against thee; if fierce winds become thine enemy; if the heavens gather blackness, and all the elements combine to hedge up the way; and above all, if the very jaws of hell shall gape open the mouth wide after thee, know thou, my son, that all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good.  The Son of Man hath descended below them all. Art thou greater than he?" How can we ask the Lord why we suffer when our Savior suffered far more than we ever could? He suffered so we don't have to, he will carry your burdens if you let him, don't let his sacrifice be in vain. Give him your burdens and your sorrows, he has beckoned us to do so over and over. It's ok to be sad, to be hurt, to be scared but I know that when I put my life in His hands, I am ok, and I am so thankful for that.
Now get ready for it, I am going to use an Ozzy Osbourne song and talk about Jesus in the same paragraph. That's right, the Prince of Darkness and the Savior of the World. But I have to admit one of my favorite songs to listen to when things get crazy is "Lay your world on me." Now go listen to it!  (I even wanted it to be our wedding song but James nixed that idea... Probably my only wedding planning regret 😄) But I love it! Some of the lyrics are:
Give me your pain
Give me your anger
Let me be your rock
I can be the pillar of strength that you need
I'll help you keep it all together
It's better late than never
Lay your world on me
I can take the weight
We all laugh and we all cry
We all hurt the same inside
We all fall down and we lose faith in who we really are
But if we bend instead of break
The choice for us is to make it together
Lay your world on me
I know that when we rely on our Savior and his atonement we can be lifted up from any low. He can take the weight.
And since I haven't already left all 2 of you avid readers with enough quotes, lyrics and scripture, I have one more for you. This is just a poem I wrote to share my feelings on the atonement and my love for my Savior and all he's done for me. Hopefully this Easter we can all remember what it is truly about.

"In Gethsemane"
When my faith is being shaken and my spirit feeling weak.
These are the moments I fall down to my knees.
When the path ahead is rocky, and I feel lost in disbelief.
I remember that this path was paved when my Savior died for me.
When he suffered more than any hurt I could feel right now,
it's easier to see the why, and stop asking how.
How could the Lord forget, how could this happen to me?
These are questions that were answered, in Gethsemane.
As our Savior trembled, and bled from every pore.
He knew it was our sorrow, he would suffer for.
He knew that He was chosen, to save the world from sin
and carry all our sorrows so we can be free again.
He catches me when I stumble, he carries me when I'm weak.
He comforts me when I feel alone and everything seems bleak.
Because of his atonement, his selfless sacrifice.
I can be made whole again when I feel I don't suffice.
I have been chosen to walk a path that was made for me alone.
And while I walk and find my way, my spirit He will hone.
He will mold me and will shape me and guide me to the light.
And as he tests my faith through trails, he is always by my side.
I am strengthened by my Savior and all he does for me.
I know His love only began in Gethsemane.

Happy Easter!
